قد كنت عبداً والهوى حاكمي

قد كنت عبداً والهوى حاكمي

فاليومَ أولى أن أسمى به

فاليومَ أولى أن أسمى به

Once I was a servant, and desire was my ruler;

I was once a slave, and passion was my ruler.

but today I am worthier to be called by that name,

So today I have more right to bear that name,

لأنني عبدٌ لربٍّ يرى

لأنني عبدٌ لربٍّ يرى

وما له في الخلق من مشبه

وما له في الخلق من مشبه

for I am a servant of my Lord, who sees,

for I am a slave to a Lord who sees,

and among creation none resembles Him.

and none in creation resembles Him.

أصبحت منه فلكاً حاوياً

أصبحت منه فلكاً حاوياً

يدورُ بالحكمِ على قطبه

يدورُ بالحكمِ على قطبه

Through Him I have become an encompassing celestial sphere,

From Him I have become an encompassing sphere,

turning by the divine command upon its pole.

revolving by decree around its pole.

لأنه قال لنا مخبراً

لأنه قال لنا مخبراً

بأنه في العبد في قلبه

بأنه في العبد في قلبه

For He said to us, revealing

For He told us, declaring,

that He is within the servant, within his heart.

that He is in the servant, in his heart.

فمن يردْ يشهدْ خلاقه

فمن يردْ يشهدْ خلاقه

شهوده المربوب من ربه

شهوده المربوب من ربه

Whoever desires shall behold his Creator;

So whoever wishes to behold his Creator—

his witnessing, as one under lordship, comes from his Lord.

his beholding of the creature comes from his Lord—

فليقلب العين الذي قد بدا

فليقلب العين الذي قد بدا

فإنه المشهود في قلبه

فإنه المشهود في قلبه

So let the one who has appeared turn the eye,

let him reverse the entity that has appeared,

for He is the One witnessed within his heart.

for He is the one beheld within his heart.

سبحانه عزَّ وعزتْ به

سبحانه عزَّ وعزتْ به

أنفسنا والكلُّ منه به

أنفسنا والكلُّ منه به

Glory be to Him! Mighty and majestic is He; through Him were ennobled

Glory be to Him! Mighty is He, and mighty through Him

our souls; and all is from Him and through Him.

هو الذي يعبد في عرشه

هو الذي يعبد في عرشه

كمثلِ ما يعبد في تربه

كمثلِ ما يعبد في تربه

He is the One worshiped upon His Throne,

He is the One worshipped upon His Throne,

just as He is worshiped in His earth.

just as He is worshipped in His dust.
