لا تعترض فعله إن كنتَ ذا أدبٍ

واضمم إليك جناحَ السلم من رهبِ

واضمم إليك جناحَ السلم من رهبِ

Do not object to His act, if you possess true courtesy;

Do not object to His act if you possess courtesy.

Draw the wing of peace close about you, out of awe.

And draw the wing of peace to yourself out of dread.

وسلِّم الأمر ما لم تبد فاحشة

وسلِّم الأمر ما لم تبد فاحشة

فإنْ بدتْ فاحذر التدريجَ في الهرب

فإنْ بدتْ فاحذر التدريجَ في الهرب

Acquiesce in the matter so long as no abomination appears;

And surrender the matter so long as no abomination appears.

But if one appears, beware of taking flight by degrees.

And if one appears, beware of fleeing by degrees.

ولا يغرنك أرواحٌ مخبّرة

ولا يغرنك أرواحٌ مخبّرة

من عند ربك إن السلم كالحرب

من عند ربك إن السلم كالحرب

And let no reporting spirits deceive you—

And do not let spirits bearing news deceive you,

from your Lord; indeed, peace is like war.

إنّ الذي قال إن الفعل مصدرُه

إنّ الذي قال إن الفعل مصدرُه

من قد درى منه كالشرك والكذب

من قد درى منه كالشرك والكذب

Indeed, whoever says that an act has its source

Indeed, what he said—that the act has its source

in one who knows it is akin to idolatry and falsehood.

In one he has known through it—is like polytheism and lying.

فاهرب إلى فعله من فعله فإذا

فاهرب إلى فعله من فعله فإذا

ما غبتَ عن فعله فاحذر من السبب

ما غبتَ عن فعله فاحذر من السبب

So flee to His act from His act; and whenever

you lose sight of His act, beware of the cause.
