أُطارِحُI exchange laments with كُلَّevery هاتِفَةٍcalling bird بِأَيكٍin a grove
عَلىupon فَنَنٍa bough بِأَفنانِamid the branches of الشُجونِsorrows
I converse with every calling bird in a grove,
I exchange laments with every calling bird in a grove,
perched on a bough amid sorrow’s many branches.
Upon a bough, amid the branches of sorrow.
فَتَبكيso she weeps for إِلفَهاher mate مِنfrom غَيرِabsence of دَمعٍtears
وَدَمعُand tears الحُزنِof sorrow يَهمُلُstream مِنfrom جُفونيmy eyelids
She weeps for her mate, yet sheds no tears,
So she weeps for her mate without tears,
while sorrow’s tears stream from my eyelids.
And tears of sorrow stream from my eyelids.
أَقولُI say لَهاto her وَقَدand already سَمَحَتyielded freely جُفونيmy eyelids
بِأَدمُعِهاwith their tears تُخَبِّرُtell عَنof شُؤونيmy affairs
I say to her, as my eyelids freely yield
I say to her, my eyelids having freely yielded
their tears, revealing all that troubles me:
Their tears, which tell of my plight:
أَعِندَكِdo you have بِالَّذيabout the one whom أَهواهُI love him عِلمٌknowledge
وَهَلand did قالواthey rested at midday بِأَفياءِin the shade of الغُصونِthe branches
“Have you any knowledge of the one I love?
Have you any knowledge of the one I love?
And have they spoken beneath the boughs’ shade?”
And did they take their midday rest in the shade of the branches?
