When the luminous full moon rises at nightfall,

I see its radiance in created things.

Yet it has no light when the sun shines forth,

though that light had shone from it at nightfall.

For the light comes only from Dhukāʾ, the sun; therefore

the luminous full moon does not overpower Dhukāʾ.

For it has two abodes: in its own essence, and in

the polished surface of a body, morning and evening.

Have you not seen that the full moon eclipses the sun itself

when it is in its dark phase, out of jealousy and fidelity?

Yet only from sight; the sun's light

within it has never ceased to give the eyes clarity.

And my perception of the visible lies between me and the sun,

and God has placed a veil over it.

And this is of the strange knowledge brought

to you by the fullest unveiling, as a summons.

And every proof that comes to you through an adversary

who contradicts my words—make it dust.

I alone was singled out for this knowledge, so I found no

one who had tasted it, with whom I might be equal.

    And in the barren land I was fed its taste;

thus I found no way to do without this taste.

A dusky one brought it to me; it was not brought to me by

flotsam when a valley flowed with knowledge.

So through it I grew in subtlety and knowledge, but did not grow

through it in coarseness or harshness within my being.

And he informed me therein that my Guardian

is with me likewise; so build upon it a structure,

lofty and exalted, endowed with support and strength,

without pillars, until it becomes a sky,

adorned with radiant stars; and make

your hearts its bedding and its covering.

Then it will enfold you until, when you bear it,

an adornment appears, offering the eyes a lovely sight,

    يمد بها كوني سنا وسناء

    its crests perfumed, afflicted with fever;

through it he supplies my being with radiance and glory,

so that everyone endowed with reason fails to comprehend it,

and accepts it from him as life-giving rain and modesty.

This that I have recounted will come to our aid,

when the All-Merciful removes a veil from you.
