Glory be to Him who knows yet does not know,

just as I know yet do not know.

So do not say, after this, that He

is more knowing of the condition I am in,

for I have no knowledge of what

He knows of me; so I do not know.

If, then, there is superiority in knowledge through us,

the saying "He is the most knowing" is true.

For that He made manifest the particle "until"; when

we know a matter we had not known,

it is, in both respects, a sign

of what is expressly stated as newly arisen, and of the most ancient.

    لأجلِ ذا الواقعِ لا يعلم

    Thus He brings the relation into being from our existence;

on account of this occurrence, He does not know.

Like the mercy of clear skies when it arrives,

and after this, calamity follows it.

So a thing is distinguished by its effects,

and the ruling in the recipient is not known

    وعنده يحكم من يحكم

    until it is seen manifest in his very essence;

and in its presence, whoever judges gives judgment

that it is what occurs within his being,

though before this he did not understand.

The reality of possibility has unsettled

whoever attributes the soundest knowledge to Him.

When the rim of the forenoon sun appears,

the stars fall before it from that moment,

and their lights are subsumed in its presence,

for the sun has the greatest radiance.

So the intellect knows that their lights

are shining, though sense does not understand.

None perceives light but light itself,

through us, just as the dark one perceives it.

Yet our perception is through light,

in meaning and in sense—so understand it thus, all of you.
