They loaded the howdahs onto the swift she-camels,

and placed within them idols and full moons.

They promised my heart that they would return—

but does the lovely maiden promise anything but deception?

She saluted with her jujube-red fingertips in farewell,

then shed tears that kindle the blaze.

Then, when she turned away, having set her course,

    seeking al-Hawarnaq, then al-Sadir,

I cried for doom in their wake.

She answered and said, 'Do you call for doom?

Then do not call for just one doom on her account,

but call for doom in abundance.'

Ah, doves of the arak trees, a little quiet!

For separation has only increased your cooing.

And your lament, O you doves,

stirs the yearning lover, rouses the jealous one,

melts the heart, drives away sleep,

    doubles our longings and sighs.

Death hovers at the doves' lament,

so one begs it for a little more life.

Perhaps a breath of Hajir's east wind

will drive a spreading cloud toward us,

    فَما اِزدادَ سُحبُكَ إِلّا نُفورا

    to quench with it the thirst of parched souls;

yet your clouds have only fled the more.

So, watcher of the star, be my boon companion,

and sleepless watcher of the lightning, be my nighttime companion.

O sleeper through the night, may you enjoy it!

Then tell Death: 'You have peopled the graves.'

For, had you loved the amorous maiden,

you would have attained bliss through her, and joy.

You would share the wines of the veil with beauties,

whisper to the suns and coo to the full moons.
