By smell I sometimes perceive, and by sight,

what no one else perceives through sight.

And I am, without doubt, at no risk from it,

like one who follows the infallible in what is reported.

One whose state is smelling is higher than him in rank—

I mean the follower, not perception through sight.

Taste has a noble grasp; none suffices it

in its action save those versed in striking and sight.

Nor does tasting with one organ reveal

another organ's taste to the father of humankind.
