إذا أشهدت أنك في شهود

إذا أشهدت أنك في شهود

خليّ عن مقاومة الشهيدِ

خليّ عن مقاومة الشهيدِ

If you are made to witness that you are in witnessing,

If you bear witness that you are in the witnessing,

free from opposing the Witness,

Cease resisting the martyr.

وإنك ناظر فيه إليه

وإنك ناظر فيه إليه

به من كونِه ربَّ العبيدِ

به من كونِه ربَّ العبيدِ

and indeed you gaze in him toward him,

And you are looking to him, to Him

through him, insofar as he is Lord of the servants,

Through his being the Lord of servants.

وإنك مبتغٍ طلباً مَزيداً

وإنك مبتغٍ طلباً مَزيداً

فقد شُرعَ السؤالُ من المزيد

فقد شُرعَ السؤالُ من المزيد

and indeed you seek more in your quest,

And you are seeking more increase,

then petitioning the Giver of increase has indeed been ordained.

So asking for more has been legislated.

رأيتُ العينَ ليس لها نظيرٌ

رأيتُ العينَ ليس لها نظيرٌ

يقاوم من مُرادٍ أو مُريد

يقاوم من مُرادٍ أو مُريد

I saw the Essence; it has no equal

I saw the eye that has no peer

to contend with it, whether sought or seeking.

Resisting the purposeful or the follower.

إذا ما الحق جلاه إلينا

إذا ما الحق جلاه إلينا

تعيَّنَ في السيادةِ والمسُودِ

تعيَّنَ في السيادةِ والمسُودِ

When the Real unveils it to us,

When the Truth manifests itself to us,

it takes definite form in mastery and the one mastered.

It is specified in mastery and prostration.

فما في الكونِ من يدري كلامي

فما في الكونِ من يدري كلامي

سوى مَنْ عينه حبلُ الوريد

سوى مَنْ عينه حبلُ الوريد

So no one in the universe understands my words,

So none in the universe knows my words

except one whose essence is the jugular vein.

Except the one whose vein is the lifetime.

فيظهرُني فأظهره فيخفى

فيظهرُني فأظهره فيخفى

فأخفيه بآدابِ السجودِ

فأخفيه بآدابِ السجودِ

Then he reveals me; I reveal him, and he becomes hidden,

So he manifests me and I manifest him and he hides

so I conceal him through the proprieties of prostration.

And I hide him in the manners of prostration.

سجدتُ له سجودَ هوى بحقٍّ

سجدتُ له سجودَ هوى بحقٍّ

فأكرم بالسلامِ وبالشهود

فأكرم بالسلامِ وبالشهود

I prostrated before him with love's prostration, in truth:

I prostrated to Him in prostration of passion in truth,

so how noble are peace and witnessing!

So He honored with peace and witnessing.

رفعتُ به فلم أر غير ذاتي

رفعتُ به فلم أر غير ذاتي

تصرف في القيام وفي القعود

تصرف في القيام وفي القعود

I rose through him and saw nothing but my own self,

I was raised through Him yet I did not see other than my essence

acting while standing and while sitting,

Acting in standing and sitting.

ليشهد في جميع الأمر منه

ليشهد في جميع الأمر منه

وفيه فينطفي غيظاً حسودي

وفيه فينطفي غيظاً حسودي

so that he may witness in every affair, from him,

That He may witness in all matters from Him

and in him—so my envier is extinguished by rage.

And in Him, so my jealous rage is extinguished.
