This existence that we know by convention

is not the existence that we know through unveiling.

Reason is ignorant of it, and thought denies it.

Remembrance reveals it, and the inner secret conceals it.

It is God, yet his manifestations do not know

that he is their very being; the Real obscures it

    to minds that habits veil.

Hence they deny what the inner secrets comprehend,

except for one from each community,

for your Lord honors him by making it known.

    O Lord, forgiveness and pardon! I am a man;

whoever asks me about the matter, I do not inform him

except by your command; the servant has no

power to act without a command from you that he knows.

You generously bestowed a secret on me, so I divulged it.

And what his mouth uttered was not proper conduct.

You reproached your servant for it, then took charge of it

on his behalf, to protect him, since you inspire him.

You erased it from breasts that you know,

through drowsiness or light sleep; thus his blood was spared.

I did not know that the matter concerning it stood thus

before God, and that reproach would befall him.

Were it not for his love for us, he would have punished us.

Nor is anyone whom the All-Merciful honors humiliated.

Indeed, what my Lord willed that I should keep in reserve,

I wish to make plain, yet the spiritual state obscures it,

except to the heart of one whom our Creator has willed

should know it; the tongue of the moment confirms it,

like al-Tunisi and whoever runs on his racecourse,

among the hearts that give and conceal it.

I gave each locus what befits it,

and spoke of it in a statement I do not obscure.

He says to the utterance, 'Be,' so that it comes to be through him.

After that, he comes to him and makes him remorseful.

Had he not brought it into being, its reality would not have appeared.

Yet knowledge governs him through what is known.

Judgment is passed upon him through it, so the Real has pledged allegiance to him.

Yet he deludes him through the entity's coming into being.
