العلمُ بالأحكام لا يظهر

العلمُ بالأحكام لا يظهر

إلا على ألسنة الرسْلِ

إلا على ألسنة الرسْلِ

Knowledge of the rulings does not appear

Knowledge of the rulings is only revealed

except on the tongues of the messengers.

On the tongues of the messengers

والعلمُ بالآياتِ لا ينجلي

والعلمُ بالآياتِ لا ينجلي

إلا لمن يمشي على السبل

إلا لمن يمشي على السبل

And knowledge of the signs does not become clear

And knowledge of the signs is only illuminated

except to one who walks the paths.

For those who walk the path

فاحذر إذا شاهدت توحيده

فاحذر إذا شاهدت توحيده

شهود عينِ المثل لا الشكل

شهود عينِ المثل لا الشكل

So beware, when you witness His oneness,

So beware when you witness His oneness

of beholding the essence of likeness, not the form.

The witnessing of the image, not the form

فإنه لم ينفِ إلا الذي

فإنه لم ينفِ إلا الذي

سميته بالشكلِ والمثلِ

سميته بالشكلِ والمثلِ

For He negated only what

For He only denied that

you called form and likeness.

Which you called the form and the image

فلو نفى الرتبةَ لم يتخذ

فلو نفى الرتبةَ لم يتخذ

خليفةً في عالم السفلِ

خليفةً في عالم السفلِ

For had He negated rank, He would not have taken

For if He denied the hierarchy, He would not have appointed

a vicegerent in the lower world.

A successor in the world of the lowly

والله قد عيّن نوّابه

والله قد عيّن نوّابه

في نشأةٍ قامتْ من الثقل

في نشأةٍ قامتْ من الثقل

And God has appointed His deputies

And God has appointed His representatives

in a constitution that arose from heaviness.

In a genesis that rose from the physical

لم يقبل الروحَ له صورة

لم يقبل الروحَ له صورة

مجرَّداً عن نسبة الأصل

مجرَّداً عن نسبة الأصل

He did not accept the spirit as an image of Himself,

The spirit would not accept a form for Him

stripped of its relation to the origin.

Stripped of the attribution of the origin

ألا ترى كيف نهى عبدَه

ألا ترى كيف نهى عبدَه

عن البترا وهي في النفل

عن البترا وهي في النفل

Do you not see how He forbade His servant

Do you not see how He forbade His servant

from the truncated prayer, though it is voluntary?

From mutilation while it was in infancy

وقدَّم الشفع على وتره

وقدَّم الشفع على وتره

في سُورةِ الفجر إلى الليلِ

في سُورةِ الفجر إلى الليلِ

And He placed the even before His odd number

And put pairing before the single

in the surah 'The Dawn,' as far as the night,

In the chapter of the Dawn until the night

لأنه يقصدُ إنتاجها

لأنه يقصدُ إنتاجها

في عالم التفصيل والوصلِ

في عالم التفصيل والوصلِ

for He intends its production

Because He intends to create it

in the realm of differentiation and union.

In the world of detail and connection

لا يعرفُ الفضلَ على وجهه

لا يعرفُ الفضلَ على وجهه

إلا الذي يعطي من الفضل

إلا الذي يعطي من الفضل

No one knows bounty as it truly is

None knows grace in its essence

except one who gives from abundance.

Except one who gives from grace

ينقص ذو الإيثار في بذلِه

ينقص ذو الإيثار في بذلِه

عن منزلِ الأفضالِ والفضل

عن منزلِ الأفضالِ والفضل

One who puts others first falls short in his giving

One of generosity decreases in his giving

of the station of favors and bounty.
