    When the auspicious star flickers in its eastern sky,

    The tongue of its state speaks, without doubt:

    له مكنة تسمو على ظاهرِ السوا

    Contemplate a veil that had stood between us;

    It has a power that rises above the outward face of otherness.

    A treasury of God's secrets and His unseen,

    And a source of secrets revealed to one possessing understanding.

    We spurred the steeds of resolve across the wasteland of piety,

    And the jealous care of coal-black night had veiled us.

    And we returned with what pleases the friend—if only you could see

    Our mounts, puffing through their nose-rings from weariness!

    رقيتُ بها حتى ظهرتْ لمستوى

    I mounted noble camels, tawny and lean;

    I ascended on them until they emerged onto a level height.

    And I beheld wonders from the knowledge of unseen things,

    Kept from mention, in the judgment of one who understands.

    Among them were songbirds above an arak bough,

    Rousing the sorrows of the grieving one whenever he called.

    أفيضوا علينا النور من قَرصَةِ المهى

    And radiant ones with flowing tresses;

    Pour light upon us from the sun's disc.

    عذات الثنايا طاهراتٍ من الخَنا

    And the plucking of strings by the hands of nubile maidens,

    With sweet front teeth, untouched by lewdness;

    And women breathing out spells in the gloom of night.

    Perhaps, perchance, time will pounce upon them tomorrow.

    And they knew with certainty that its spell-breath strikes

    Every heart that strayed from the paths of guidance.

    I entered the graves of the believers and found nothing

    But houris and youths in the garden of contentment.

    So I said: May you enjoy your bliss! Then I traversed eight,

    From the lowest abode to the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary.

    And doubt's wing was clipped from the eye of one who sees,

    And the seal of musk was broken in the midst of morning light.

    O, would that throughout time I saw no single one

    In whom I delight, without returning as a pair.

    And when I saw knowledge rising by force

    Upon the noble camels of pages, I became certain of permanence.

    على المسجد الأقصى إلى كعبةِ الدما

    And I said to noble youths: Come, alight

    At al-Aqsa Mosque, toward the Kaaba of images;

    And stand at the beloved's gate, and convey

    The message of one who, if he willed, would be, without toil.

    So they rose and called to the beloved and his household:

    Peace upon the people of affection and purity.

    Peace upon you, from yourselves, if you look

    With an eye that regards alike whoever obeyed or rebelled.

    Then the chief of the company rose; rushing toward him were

    Men whose bodies had come to inhabit the heights.

    And he said: Upon you be the like of what you brought.

    Then the company's knowledgeable one rose, granting me hospitality.

    Take heed: hear my words; leave my wisdom's secret alone.

    And this is my prayer: respond to the one who called.
