When I saw my existence, what I saw was blindness.

And I have never ceased to be blind through it, unto eternity.

Whenever it sets bounds upon me, at every moment,

I remain in hardship with every breath.

Thus the verses came to us, speaking of it,

In Qaf; and He revealed them in Surah al-Balad,

Sent down from above seven heavens,

Upon the reality of one endowed with spirit and body.

He brought them, his call reaching the ears,

By leave of their Revealer, the One, the Self-Sufficient.

So when my ear heard his recitation,

Through imagination, in a dome standing upon pillars,

Square in form, and the angels guard him

From every envious one—and each is envious

Of his own kind; thus all creation envies him,

Among the angels aloft upon the heights.

Indeed, those whose home lies beneath the earth's ground

Are surely burned by the star's light, set to keep watch.

For he is a copy of them all; thus his is

This low flight; so say what is good, and add no more.

When I saw that he held sway over my body,

I learned from him what he cast into my mind.

Had the words of the Book not corresponded to

The very meanings, creation would be astray.

So its inimitability is only its freedom

From falsehoods—this is its secret, and that suffices.

And all besides it consists of embellished sayings,

Having nothing to do with creation—so take no account of them.

    Indeed, the Qur'an is a light by which illumination is sought;

It guides, with the most excellent Sunnah, toward right guidance.

So follow it upward if you are below,

And follow it downward if you are above.
