منwhoever يدَّرعْdons armor يطلعْrises صوناًfor protection علىover الحرمِthe sanctuary
من يدَّرعْ يطلعْ صوناً على الحرمِ
وليسand does not يدريknow بهof it إلاexcept أولواthose endowed with الكرمِgenerosity
وليس يدري به إلا أولوا الكرمِ
Whoever dons armor rises to safeguard the sanctuary.
Whoever is armored will emerge protected over the sanctuary
And none knows of it but those endowed with generosity.
And none know of him except the generous
قومa people تراهمyou see them إذاwhen الرحمنthe All-Merciful فاجأهمsurprises them
قوم تراهم إذا الرحمن فاجأهم
سكرىdrunk حيارىbewildered بهby Him فيin مجمعِthe meeting place of الهممِaspirations
سكرى حيارى به في مجمعِ الهممِ
A people you see, when the All-Merciful surprises them,
A people you see, when the Most Merciful surprises them
Drunk and bewildered by Him where aspirations meet.
Dazed and confused by Him in the assembly of resolves
لاnot يعبدونthey worship سوىother than الرحمنthe All-Merciful ربهمُtheir Lord
لا يعبدون سوى الرحمن ربهمُ
فيin صورةِthe form of النونNūn لاno بلrather صورةthe form of القلمthe Pen
في صورةِ النون لا بل صورة القلم
They worship none but the All-Merciful, their Lord,
They worship none but their Lord, the Most Merciful
In the form of Nūn—no, rather, the form of the Pen.
In the form of the letter 'nun', nay the form of the pen
لذاكfor that reason يجملهHe summarizes it وقتاًfor a time فيبهمهand so makes it obscure
لذاك يجمله وقتاً فيبهمه
وثمand then يوضحهmakes it clear التفصيلُdetailed exposition فيamong الأممthe nations
وثم يوضحه التفصيلُ في الأمم
Thus He sets it forth in summary for a time, making it obscure;
Thus He beautifies it for a time and makes it vague
And then detailed exposition makes it clear among the nations.
Then details it clearly for the nations
إذاwhen تسطرهyou inscribe it فيon اللوحthe Tablet تعرفهthey recognize it
إذا تسطره في اللوح تعرفه
أهلthe people of التلاوةrecitation منfrom عُرْبٍArabs ومنand from عَجَمِnon-Arabs
أهل التلاوة من عُرْبٍ ومن عَجَمِ
When you inscribe it on the Tablet, it is recognized
When He lines it on the Tablet you recognize it
By the people of recitation, Arabs and non-Arabs.
The people of recitation, both Arab and non-Arab
لكلِّfor each صنفٍgroup منamong الأصنافِthe groups دينهمُtheir religion
لكلِّ صنفٍ من الأصنافِ دينهمُ
وليand for me أناI دينُthe religion of شَرعِthe law of اللهGod فيin القدمbeginningless eternity
ولي أنا دينُ شَرعِ الله في القدم
Each group among the groups has its own religion;
For each class of the classes, their religion
And mine is the religion of God's law in beginningless eternity.
And mine is the religion of God's law from the beginning
إذاwhen عملتُI act بهaccording to it ربِّيmy Lord يميزنيdistinguishes me
إذا عملتُ به ربِّي يميزني
فيamong أهلهits people أهلthe people of هذاthis الذكرremembrance والحكمand judgment
في أهله أهل هذا الذكر والحكم
When I act according to it, my Lord distinguishes me
When I practice it, my Lord distinguishes me
Among its people—the people of this remembrance and judgment.
Among its people, the people of this remembrance and wisdom
