    O One of pure, exalted majesty, how purified were

    the eyes’ pupils through Him, at the most radiant sight!

    And how can the eye see Him, while He is transcendent,

    with His lofty, hallowed, and most splendid Seat?

    When my two ears heard the explanation of His speech,

    I knew for certain which of us was more desirable.

    God’s majesty is exalted beyond every perceiver.

    And God has a state—how delightful and how desirable!

    إلا أنَّ عبد الله من كان قد أنهى

    So I brought my affair to an end, seeking my Creator’s due;

    yet God’s servant is one who has already brought it to an end.

    For if what is said is true, then he

    affirms it as a state; otherwise, he may forbid.

    And one like me is heedless of the Truth when

    he affirms it as a command; and one like me forbids.

    فما أمكن المملوك ردَّ فما أدهى

    He overwhelmed me with a matter I had not known before;

    so the bondservant could not resist—how calamitous!

    The side of the Ancient House grew weak through might,

    so I saw no house more beloved than it, nor more formidable.

    فإن لم يكن بالقولِ بالحال قد ألهى

    Nor did an intimate friend or companion distract me from it;

    for if not through speech, through his state he did distract.

    فإني لها أسعى كما أنني منها

    So do not veil me from You, my Lord, with a form;

    for I strive toward it, just as I am of it.

    My discourse, which I pour forth while listening,

    is drawn solely from our account of it.

    And my soul has known no exact counterpart,

    as intellects claim I was a likeness to it.

    When my soul aspires to grasp its own essence,

    then it is the one called ignorant and foolish.

    It singles out, when it does, noble souls,

    pure in their qualities, in the most misshapen form.
