غادَرونيthey left me بِالأَثيلِat al-Athil وَالنَقاand al-Naqa
أَسكُبُI pour out الدَمعَtears وَأَشكوand I lament الحُرَقاthe burning pangs
They left me at al-Athil and al-Naqa.
They left me with a fading shadow and a mirage
I pour out tears and lament the burning pangs.
I shed tears and complain of burning
بِأَبيwith my father as ransom مَنthe one ذُبتُI melted away فيهِfor him كَمَداًin grief
بِأَبيwith my father as ransom مَنthe one مُتُّI died مِنهُbecause of him فَرَقاof fear
May my father be a ransom for him, for whom I melted away in grief.
By the one I melted for like a candle
May my father be a ransom for him, from fear of whom I died.
By the one I die of love for him until we are separated
حُمرَةُthe redness الحَجلَةِof the partridge فيin وَجنَتِهِhis cheek

وَضَحُthe whiteness الصُبحِof dawn يُناغيsoftly converses with الشَفَقاtwilight's red glow
The partridge's redness is in his cheek;
The redness of dusk on his cheeks
The whiteness of dawn softly converses with twilight's red glow.
And the dawn glows, competing with the horizon
قَوَّضَstruck its tent الصَبرُpatience فَطَنَّبَso pitched its tent الأَسىsorrow
وَأَناand I ماin the space بَينَbetween هذَينِthese two لَقاa cast-off thing
Patience struck its tent, so sorrow pitched its own;
Patience collapsed, and sorrow fluttered
And I am cast aside between these two.
While I am between the two, we met
مَنwho لِبَثّيfor my anguish مَنwho لِوَجديfor my longing دُلَّنيshow me

مَنwho لِحُزنيfor my sorrow مِنwho لِصَبٍّfor a lovesick lover عَشِقاwho loved passionately
Who is there for my anguish, who for my longing? Show me.
Who will stay with me, who will feel my pain, guide me
Who for my sorrow, who for a lover consumed by love?
Who will share my sorrow, who fell in love like me
كُلَّماwhenever ضَنَّتheld back تَباريحُthe torments الهَوىof love
فَضَحَexposed الدَمعُtears الجَوىthe inward anguish وَالأَرَقاand sleeplessness
Whenever love's torments kept silent,
Whenever the thoughts of passion tightened
Tears exposed the inward anguish and sleeplessness.
Tears streamed and kept me awake
فَإِذاso when قُلتُI said هَبواgrant ليto me نَظرَةًa glance
قيلَit was said ماnot تُمنَعُit is withheld إِلّاexcept شَفَقاout of compassion
So when I said, 'Grant me a glance,'
So when I say come and look at me
It was said, 'It is withheld only out of compassion.'
I am told you are denied out of shame
ماwhat عَسىmight تُغنيكَbenefit you مِنهُمfrom them نَظرَةٌa glance

هِيَit إِلّاonly لَمحُa flash بَرقٍof lightning بَرَقاthat flashed
What good could a glance from them do you?
What use is a glance from them to you
It is only the flash of lightning that flashed.
It is just a glimpse of lightning, flashing
لَستُI do not أَنسىforget إِذwhen حَداchanted to urge onward الحاديthe camel-driver بِهِمwith them

I do not forget when the camel-driver urged them onward with song,
I won't forget when the lost ones were led away
Seeking separation and making for al-Abraq.
Seeking separation and desiring distance
نَعَقَتcroaked أَغرِبَةُthe ravens البَينِof separation بِهِمat them
لاmay not رَعىprotect اللَهُGod غُراباًa raven نَعَقاthat croaked
The ravens of separation croaked at them;
The camel of separation cried for them
May God not protect a raven that croaked!
May Allah not let a crow croak like that
ماnot غُرابُthe raven البَينِof separation إِلّاbut جَمَلٌa camel

The raven of separation is nothing but a camel
The crow of separation is just a camel
That bore the loved ones away at a swift, long-striding pace.
That walked away with the loved ones, straightening its neck
