Whomever God has purified, no defilement touches.
He whom Allah has purified, no filth can stain him
He is the sanctified one—no, rather, his very essence is holiness.
He is the Sanctified One, rather the essence of sanctity

Like the household of God's Messenger, our master,
Like the Household of the Messenger of Allah, our Master
who is the noble imam, the discerning lord.
He is the generous Imam, the noble, the radiant

جاء البشير بما الآذانُ قد سمعت

ألقى قليلا وجلَّ القوم قد نعسوا
The bearer of glad tidings came with what the ears had heard;
The bringer of glad tidings came with what the call to prayer had heard
he imparted a little, while most of the people had grown drowsy.
He spoke a little while the people were dozing off

عند المواهبِ والأقوام ما بخسوا
They slept, oblivious to the Real—no, rather, to their own selves,
They slept not caring about the truth, rather about themselves
at the bestowal of gifts; the people were not shortchanged.
When favors come, people are seldom stingy

When it became clear that sleep was their ruler,
When he realized that sleep had overcome them
for this reason, guardians and watchmen were appointed.
He appointed guards and sentinels for that reason

For this reason came glad tidings, and there was for them
For that reason the good news came and they had
a touch to safeguard them because of their sleep.
Due to their sleep, protection that erased

So when they were protected from every mishap
So when they were protected from every incident

That could befall the likes of them, they got up and did not sit

upholding their master's due at every moment,
By the right of their Master at all times
in purity, neither betraying nor casting confusion
With clarity, loyal, and free of doubt

upon their own selves, knowing their condition.
Knowing their own souls, they did not steal
Hence they were not snatched from the vision of realization.
A glimpse of the scene of realization

Indeed, the existence whose attainment has grown so elusive—
The being whose desire was hard to attain
in it and its like, spirits are devoured.
In it and its like, souls prey

The cavalry raided their armies by night;
At night the horses raided their troops
then it was said they had been slain, when it was said they had gained.
It was said they were killed when it was said they won

Had they known the matter they did not know,
If only they knew what they were ignorant of
by God, they would not have been overturned onto their heads.
They would not have bowed their heads, by Allah

I utter a saying, and there is no blame in the saying,
I say words without objection
which dispels from the soul the grief the self has caused it.
That relieve the soul of what saddened it

Moses gained nothing through the firebrand he sought
Moses did not attain with what he desired of revelation
except what the firebrand gained on his account.
Except what he attained for its sake from the Merciful

Had the people of bounty's being received
If the people of generous existence had attained
what Moses received from the All-Merciful, they would not have been wretched.
What Moses attained from the Merciful, they would not have been miserable

But they were wretched through that, and relied
But they were miserable because of that and relied
on their conjectures about bounty when they despaired.
On their assumptions about generosity when they despaired

I saw a youth to whom providential bounty gave,
I saw a youth who was given victories
in the land of Andalusia, water and figs.
In the land of Andalus, water and dress

He had no speech by which to sustain himself,
But he had no eloquence to speak with
and silence and muteness had taken control of him.
Silence and muteness had power over him

His sorrow had been like Mary's,
Like Mary whose sustenance was meager
over his sustenance; so he seeks it in palms.
He seeks comforts while living in hardship

And that is among the strangest states: his is
That is most amazing, for he has
a state of wealth, yet among people he is distressed.
The state of wealth while amongst people in misery

The states of a person obedient to God's command,
The states of one compliant to God's command
a hunter of wisdom, drawing a spark from the light.
Grasping the light, illuminated

Indeed, the imam through whom affairs unfold
The Imam by whom matters proceed
immerses himself in every river of states.
Is immersed in every stream of states

The secret governs him—no, rather, he governs it
The secret rules him, rather it rules him
within himself, and with him the masters have found solace.
In himself, and by it the masters were intimate

So they have no footing outside his presence;
They have no footing but in his presence
and whatever of them is at his side is effaced.
Nothing of them remains by his side

They are bewildered, drunken in their bewilderment,
They are the perplexed drunkards in their love
and in the precinct of the Real they have nothing to seek.
Having no hopes in the side of Truth

The state has annihilated them from themselves; they have not known
The state made them oblivious of it and they did not know
who they are; hence it was said, 'Today they have found relief.'
Who they were, so it was said today they sighed

Had they been torn from themselves and all that they possessed
If only they had torn themselves from everything good
with Him of every good in Him, they would not have fallen back.
That was theirs with him, they would not have slipped

والقومُ ما قرأوا علماً وما درسوا
The Essence obscures what the Names make clear,
The essence confuses what names clarify
and the people have read no lore, nor have they studied.
The people did not study knowledge or examine

Robes from the garments of exaltation were upon them;
Upon them were garments of the Most High
wretched was their casting off; what they wore came from themselves.
Evil is what they took off and what they wore from it

I entered the Garden of Eden to see a trace,
I entered the Garden of Eden to see a trace
and was told, 'Their harvest is nothing but what they planted.'
I was told their paradise was none but what they planted
