    God knows that I do not remember Him,

    For He knows my belief that He is the one who remembers.

    So none remembers Him but His own Self,

    And a veil conceals it from the servant's sight.

    And I have learned of the secluded women within the abode,

    Hidden from the beholder's perception.

    فإنْ أضيفَ إليها فهو بالنادر

    The abode is an abode of bliss, with no worry in it;

    And if any is attributed to it, that is only rarely.

    من النفوسِ إذا ما لم يكن زاجرُ

    For if they say that, it is for some purpose

    Arising in souls, when no restrainer is present;

    Or like what was said of the beauties' eyes, when

    They made my sight ill with her languid gaze [wording unclear].

    My yearning, where I gain no share in her garden,

    Arises from suffering, which is the present cause of pain.

    It is a person's constitution that gives him suffering,

    Not the abode; know, then, that judgment belongs to one who knows by experience.

    If the abode had [sorrows?], there would be no finding

    Of its pleasures by souls whose joy is manifest.

    By what brings this one bliss, another is tormented.

    By it I mean the witnessed cause, not the beholder.

    وإنْ جهلتَ فأنت التاجر الخاسر

    So if you understand what we have said, you will affirm it;

    And if you are ignorant, you are the losing merchant.
