أَلغَزتَyou posed a riddle فيabout شَيءٍa thing يَنمـdivulges (first part)
أَلغَزتَ في شَيءٍ يَنمـ
ـمُcompletes 'divulges' سِواهُsomething other than it عَنهُabout it بِسِرِّهِwith its secret
ـمُ سِواهُ عَنهُ بِسِرِّهِ
You posed a riddle about a thing—
You puzzled over something whose essence
something else divulges its secret.
Distracts him from it with its secret.
جَمَعَit gathered الدُجىdarkness وَالصُبحand dawn بَيـbetween (first part)
جَمَعَ الدُجى وَالصُبح بَيـ
ـنَcompletes 'between' ضُلوعِهِits ribs فيin صَدرِهِits breast
ـنَ ضُلوعِهِ في صَدرِهِ
It gathered darkness and dawn
It gathered nightfall and dawn between
between its ribs, within its breast.
Its ribs in its chest,
وَمُجَلَّدٌand encased بِالعَظمِin bone يَظـappears (first part)
وَمُجَلَّدٌ بِالعَظمِ يَظـ
ـهَرُcompletes 'appears' مِنهُfrom it خافيthe hidden aspect of أَمرِهِits nature
ـهَرُ مِنهُ خافي أَمرِهِ
And it is encased in bone—
And armored with bone, it shows
from it, its hidden nature emerges.
From it what's hidden of its matter.
وَإِذاand when عَكَستَyou reverse حُروفَهُits letters
وَإِذا عَكَستَ حُروفَهُ
شَرُفَgains honor الحُسامُthe keen sword بِذِكرِهِthrough its mention
شَرُفَ الحُسامُ بِذِكرِهِ
And when you reverse its letters,
And if you invert its letters
the keen sword gains honor through its mention.
Noble swords are honored by mentioning it.
وَلَقَدand indeed جَعَلتَyou have made هِلالَهُits crescent moon
وَلَقَد جَعَلتَ هِلالَهُ
وَهوَwhile it is الخَفِيُّhidden كَبَدرِهِlike its full moon
وَهوَ الخَفِيُّ كَبَدرِهِ
And indeed, you have made its crescent,
You've made its crescent,
hidden though it is, like its full moon.
While it's hidden, like its full moon.
