جاءَhas come الشِتاءُwinter وَلَيسَand there is not عِنديin my possession فَروَةٌa fur coat
وَالقُرُّand the bitter cold خَصمٌa foe لاnot يُرَدُّis repelled وَيُدفَعُand is driven back
Winter has come, and I have no fur coat.
Winter has come and I have no cloak
And the bitter cold is a foe that cannot be repelled or driven back.
And fate is an opponent who cannot be repelled
وَإِذاand when الشِتاءُwinter أَتىcomes وَماand there is not لِيَfor me فَروَةٌa fur coat
أَلفَيتَyou find كُلَّevery تَميمَةٍamulet لاnot تَنفَعُis of use
And when winter comes and I have no fur coat,
When winter comes and I have no cloak
You find that every amulet is of no use.
I find every blanket inadequate and useless
فَوَحَقَّso, by the honor of مَجدِكَyour glory وَهوَand it is جَهدُthe utmost of ألِيَّتيmy oath
وَنَداكَand your generosity وَهوَand it is لِكُلِّfor every خَطبٍcalamity مَدفَعُa defense
So, by your glory—my most solemn oath—
So I swear by your glorious reputation, it is my only strength
And your generosity, a defense against every calamity,
And call upon you, for you can dispel any affliction
إِنّيindeed, I أَبيتُI spend the night عَلىin a state of الطَوىhunger خاويempty الحَشاthe belly
سَغَباًfrom hunger وَأَحناءُand the curves of الضُلوعِthe ribs تَقَعقَعُrattle
Indeed, I spend the night hungry, my belly empty,
I spend the night on the mountain, empty and desolate
Famished, while the curves of my ribs rattle.
My ribs rattle from the bitter cold
