Were it not for love of you, the wasted, ailing man would not have risen,
He would not have gotten up were it not for your love, O slender and pliable sapling.
Weeping over the ruins, while the bend's people are absent.
The young men weep and the inhabitants of the valleys disappear.

And he foolishly questions the dwelling-place about its inhabitants,
The ignorant foolishly ask the desert about its dwellers.
Though successive winds have erased its traces.
And the signs of spirits have been erased and covered up.

At times he checks his tears, but they are stirred
At times he holds back his tears, and at other times
At times by longing's burning pangs, and spill.
The pangs of passion rouse them and they pour out.

A lovesick man whom, when the camp's people sleep, there troubles
A loved one who weeps when people sleep,
A returning memory, whose recurrence brings rapture.
Disturbed by a memory that excites him from his festival.

His fantasies call up the specter of imagination, while
Of sleep is veiled from him by longings.
The authority of fate hides it from him with yearnings.

He raves with passion for moons upon slender palm trees

Swayed by darkness, with their clusters bending over.

Well-ordered teeth adorned with fine serration and cool freshness.
Revealing dimples adorned with down and moles.

A full moon, and when veiled, she appears as a crescent.

If only I knew by what means I could draw near to you.
So I wonder through what can I approach you.

If the fair-faced ones levy a charity tax on beauty,
To the due of almsgiving, then I am the destitute stranger.
Then I am the most wretched pauper.

Whose nobility contends with him in its loftiness.

That reached the furthest horizon where ranks fall short.

Named by the highest of sciences and nobility.

And the greatest offense is that any wealth remain his.
And the greatest sin is for any speck to remain.

مِصرُ البَوارَ وَتَغشى النُوبَةَ النُوَبُ
They had thought that, through them,
And they had thought the disasters of Egypt would befall them
Egypt would meet ruin and calamities would engulf Nubia.
And good fortune would overtake them in turn.

So they fled, and the utmost their leader
So they lost heart, and the utmost their leader
Hoped of God was that Aleppo might remain his.
Hoped from God was that Aleppo would remain for him.

وَلا يَبيتُ لِخَطبٍ قَلبُهُ يَجِبُ
The management of a brilliant man, unbaffled by calamity,
A planning superior to vicissitudes,
Whose heart never spends the night pounding at a crisis.
A heart that does not spend the night trembling with anxiety over calamity.

When the onslaught of the devils of rebellion is feared,
When the demons of rebellion bare their faces,
His counsels are meteors hurled to stone them.
His views pelt them with shooting stars.

هُزَّت رِماحٌ وَلا سُلَّت لَهُ قُضُبُ
A resolve through which God quenched discord, without
A resolve by which God suppressed conflict before
Spears being brandished or swords drawn for it.
Any spears were shaken or lances cast.

أَنامَهُ المُقعِدانِ العَجزُ وَالتَعَبُ
Had another striven there to mend the breach,
Had another sought reconciliation,
The two cripplers, helplessness and weariness, would have laid him to sleep.
He would have been put to sleep by inadequacy and fatigue.

The garments of his bounty have spread amply over me; indeed,
The garments of his bounty draped over me, so
Through it, my fresh robes of youth were restored to me.
The robes of childhood were returned to me in their beauty.

I passed the night free of wishes, and there was forged
And I spent the night devoid of hopes while ties
Between me and greatness, through his door, a bond of kinship.
Were established between me and the exalted through his door.

This is praise that no flaw has marred;
This is the praise - which has no defect -
No indeed, nor has any falsehood about your glory tainted it.
No, nor did any falsehood mix into your glory.

An original meaning and polished words,
A wondrous meaning and refined words,
Rare, and rhymes, all of them choice.
Strange metaphors, all carefully chosen.

يَخورُ تَحتَ ثَنايا العاجِمِ الغَرَبُ
Not every stick is nabʿ-wood when you bite to test it;
Not every piece of wood, when adorned,
Willow gives way beneath the tester's incisors.
Sinks into the ineloquence of the foreigner’s Arabic.

Some people may face battle in doubled chain mail,
Seasoned warriors can witness war with double armor,
And others face it clad in leather armor.
As can one whose only clothing is a tattered cloak.

So remain safe, and may blessings remain abundant
So be safe, and may favorable things always
Upon you as long as days and ages recur.
Continue upon you, for all days and eras to come.
