نَحنُwe قَومٌa people ماnot ذُكِرناwe were mentioned لِاِمريءٍto anyone
نَحنُ قَومٌ ما ذُكِرنا لِاِمريءٍ
قَطُّever إِلّاexcept وَاِشتَهىand he wished أَنthat لاnot يَراناhe sees us
قَطُّ إِلّا وَاِشتَهى أَن لا يَرانا
We are a people never mentioned to anyone
We are a people none mentioned us to a soul
without his wishing not to see us.
Except he wished that he would never see us
شِعرُناour poetry مِثلُlike الحراshit (apparently الخرا) ذُقتَyou tasted الحراshit (apparently الخرا)
شِعرُنا مِثلُ الحرا ذُقتَ الحرا
صَفعَslapped (here: may he slap) اللَهُGod بِهِwith it أَصلَthe base of لِحاناour beards
صَفعَ اللَهُ بِهِ أَصلَ لِحانا
Our poetry is like shit—you have tasted shit;
Our poetry is like bitterness - taste the bitterness
may God slap the base of our beards with it.
God slapped our gums with it and made our origins smooth
