Praise be to God, to whom thanks are due.

My lord Abu Nasr has found guidance.

And he followed the truth when there shone for him

the dawn of guidance out of the darkness of sin.

And he said, "The Messiah is not to be

worshipped," and ruled that the cross be broken.

His enviers, out of obstinacy, suspected

some ulterior motive; an envier's suspicion brings no disgrace.

They said, "Hypocrisy! No distinction is made in

    Islam between hypocrisy and unbelief.

    رُبَّ اِنتِهاكٍ خَيرٌ مِنَ السَترِ

    That is merely a cover for Umar;

many an exposure is better than concealment."

So I said, "People, Umar has

an excuse, if you will hear my plea."

His sister complained to him of a fever's blaze

flaring in her vulva like live coals,

and an itch in her kernel, like the creeping

of ants, ceaselessly spreading through her.

    Her ailment baffled him, though

the transmitters of reports had vouched for his expertise.

This man used to attend to people in the

bathhouse—this is the plain truth of the matter.

Then this master—may God strengthen him—went

to her one day toward late afternoon.

He had fallen asleep from his weariness,

and his cloak slipped off him without his knowing.

And his penis slid out—no mere mast—

its head like a young camel's branding iron:

    gaping-mouthed, grim-faced, hard of

    back, hard to handle, rampant.

He said, "This is being put to menial use,

wasted—there is no contentment with fate!"

And he kept deceiving him with guile,

until he brought him to her at an appointed time.
