ياO ظالِماًunjust one جَعلmade القَطيعَةَestrangement مَذهَباa creed
ظُلماًunjustly وَلَمand did not أَرَI see عَنfrom هَواهُloving him مَذهَباan escape
O unjust one who made estrangement his creed,
O unjust one who made estrangement a creed
unjustly, while I found no escape from loving him;
Unjustly, yet I saw no deviation from his passion
وَأَضاعَand broke عَهداًa pledge لَمdid not أُضِعهُI break it حافِظاًupholding
ذِمَمَthe obligations الوَفاءِof fidelity وَحالَand turned away عَنfrom صَبٍّa lovesick lover صَباwho yearned
and broke a pledge I never broke, upholding
And he violated a covenant I never broke as a keeper
the bonds of fidelity, and turned from a lover who yearned.
He blamed loyalty and turned away from steadfast youth
غادَرتَyou left داعِيَةَa cause البِعادِof separation مَحَبَّتيmy love
فَبِأَيِّso in which حالاتيof my states أَرىI see مُتَقَرِّباdrawing near
You left my love a cause of separation;
You left the caller of separation my love
in what state of mine, then, shall I see you draw near?
So with what states will I see you approaching?
ظَبيٌa gazelle مِنَamong الأَتراكِthe Turks تَثنيbends قَدَّهُhis figure
ريحُwind الصَباthe east wind وَيُعيدُهُand restores it لينُsuppleness الصِبىof youth
A gazelle among the Turks, whose figure is bent
A gazelle of the Turks, the wind of youth bends his neck
by the east wind and restored by youth's suppleness.
And the softness of youth brings it back
ماwhat بالُهُhis condition فيon عارِضَيهِhis two cheeks مِسكُهُhis musk
وَلَقَدand indeed عَهِدتُI have known المِسكَmusk فيin سُرَرِthe navels الظِباof gazelles
Why is his musk upon his cheeks,
Why does his cheek not have musk?
when I have known musk in the navels of gazelles?
And I had known musk to be in the dens of the wild animals
غَضبانُangry لاnot يَرضىhe is pleased فَماso never قابَلتُهُI faced him
مُتَبَسِّماًsmiling إِلّاexcept that اِستَحالَhe became مُقَطَّباscowling
Angry, never appeased—I never faced him
Angry, not satisfied, so I never met him
with a smile without his turning to a scowl.
Smiling except he turned frowning
اللَهُGod يَعلَمُknows ماnever طَلَبتُI sought لَهُfor him الرِضاcontentment
إِلّاexcept that تَجَنَّىhe made false accusations ظالِماًunjustly وَتَجَنَّباand kept away
God knows I never sought to please him
God knows I never wanted but his satisfaction
without his wrongfully blaming me and keeping away.
Except he wronged, avoiding unjustly
كَمhow often قَدindeed جَنىhe wronged وَلَقيتُهُand I met him مُتَعَذِّراًapologizing
فَكَأَنَّنيso, as though I كُنتُwas المُسيءَthe wrongdoer المُذنِباthe guilty one
How often he wronged me, yet I met him apologizing,
How much he wronged and I met him apologizing
as though I were the wrongdoer, the guilty one.
As if I were the wrongdoer, the sinner
فَيَزيدُهُso it increases him طولُthe duration التَذَلُّلِof self-abasement عِزَّةًin pride
أَبَداًalways وَفرطُand excess الإِعتِذارِof apology تَعَتُّباin reproach
So prolonged self-abasement increases his pride
So the length of his humility only increases his pride
always, and excessive apology increases his reproach.
Forever, and the excess of apology only breeds resentment
عَجَباًhow strange لَهُof him اِتَّخَذَhe took الوُشاةَthe slanderers وَقَولَهُمand their words
صِدقاًas truth وَعايَنَand witnessed ماwhat لَقيتُI endured وَكَذَّباand disbelieved
How strange of him! He accepted the slanderers and their words
How strange of him, he took the slanderers and their words
as truth, yet witnessed what I suffered and denied it.
As truth, and saw what I faced and denied it
وَرَأىand he saw جُيوشَarmies الصَبرِof patience وَهيَwhile they were ضَعيفَةٌweak
فَأَغارَso he raided فيwith خَيلِthe cavalry الصُدودِof rejection وَأَجلَباand raised a clamor
And he saw the armies of patience, weak as they were,
And he saw the armies of patience as weak
so he raided with rejection's cavalry and raised a clamor.
So he raided in the horses of防ance and looted
ياO بَدرُfull moon عَمَّكَenveloped you بِالملاحَةِwith beauty خالُكَyour mole الدthe dark… (word begins)
اجي…dark (word ends) فَخَصَّكَthen singled you out بِالملاحَةِwith beauty وَاِجتَبىand chose
O full moon, your dark mole enveloped you in beauty,
O full moon, your uncle endowed you with beauty
then singled you out for loveliness and chose you.
So he singled you out for beauty and chose you
سُبحانَglory be to مَنthe One who أَذكىkindled بِخَدِّكَon your cheek لِلصِبىfor youth
لَهَباًa flame تَزيدُgrow بِهِthrough it القُلوبُthe hearts تَلَهُّباmore aflame
Glory to Him who kindled, for youth, upon your cheek
Glory to Him who ignited with your cheek for the youth
a flame that makes hearts burn more fiercely.
A flame with which hearts are inflamed
أَوor ماnot اِكتَفىHe was content مِنfrom عارِضَيكَyour two cheeks بِأَرقُمٍwith a speckled snake
حَتّىuntil لَوىHe twisted مِنfrom فَضلِthe excess صُدغِكَof your temple hair عَقرَباa scorpion
Or was He not content with a speckled snake upon your cheeks,
Or was he not satisfied with your cheek that
that He twisted a scorpion from the extra hair at your temple?
He twisted from the excess of your temple a scorpion?
