سِرُّ مِثلي في الحُبِّ لا يُبديهِ

O my two friends, do not prolong your questioning of me.

O my beloved, do not prolong my questioning,

One like me does not reveal his secret in love.

The secret of one like me in love does not reveal it.

سائِلا القَلبَ إِن قَدرتُم عَلى أَن

سائِلا القَلبَ إِن قَدرتُم عَلى أَن

تَسأَلاهُ عَنِ اِسمِ من حَلَّ فيهِ

تَسأَلاهُ عَنِ اِسمِ من حَلَّ فيهِ

Question the heart, if you are able to

Ask the heart, if you can,

Ask it about the name of the one who has settled within it.

هُوَ في الناسِ ظاهِرٌ غَيرَ حَرفٍ

هُوَ في الناسِ ظاهِرٌ غَيرَ حَرفٍ

واحِدٍ في هِجائِهِ يُخفيهِ

واحِدٍ في هِجائِهِ يُخفيهِ

He is plain to see among people, but a letter—

He is apparent among people without a single

A single one in his spelling—conceals him.

Letter in his spelling that hides him.

وَإِذا نُقطَةٌ نَفَت أُختَها عَنهُ

وَإِذا نُقطَةٌ نَفَت أُختَها عَنهُ

فَكُلٌّ بِجُهدِهِ يَتَّقيهِ

فَكُلٌّ بِجُهدِهِ يَتَّقيهِ

And when a dot has banished its sister from him,

And if a dot denied its sister from it

Then everyone does his utmost to avoid him.

Then each with its might avoids it.
