No wonder al-Muʾayyad has become, among

the people, lovelorn and besotted with ʿUmar.

    Salmān of al-ʿAmīd’s household excuses

ill-treatment, and if they treat him well, he gives thanks.

Everyone has uses for him: he is the staff

of Moses; each of them has a need for him.

Everyone has uses for him; you see them

burning and impatient to meet him.

In the morning he lies spread beneath men,

a female; by evening he is above women, a male.

How often they made him bear their burden’s weight—

    a towering calamity—yet he endured.

And his perineum is split, his anus torn

open: there is no place in him for semen to lodge.

And whenever their men give him a second draught,

their women take a first draught from him, and he departs.
