ضاعَwent to waste شِعريmy poetry وَقَلَّand diminished فيamong الناسِthe people قَدريmy standing
ضاعَ شِعري وَقَلَّ في الناسِ قَدري
مِنbecause of وُقوفيmy standing بابَthe door of اللَئيمِthe vile man اِبنِson of شُكرِShukr
مِن وُقوفي بابَ اللَئيمِ اِبنِ شُكرِ
My poetry has gone to waste, and my standing among people has fallen,
My poetry is lost and my worth is lessened among the people
Because I stood at the door of the vile Ibn Shukr.
From my standing at the door of the ignoble son of Shukr
لَوif أَتَتهُcame to him حَوالَةٌa payment demand بِحراهُfor his excrement (if بِخَراهُ is intended)
لَو أَتَتهُ حَوالَةٌ بِحراهُ
قالَhe said سدّواplug (you all) بِلِحيَتيwith my beard بابَthe entrance of جُحريmy burrow
قالَ سدّوا بِلِحيَتي بابَ جُحري
If a payment demand came to him for his excrement,
If a remittance for his debt came to him
He would say, 'Plug the entrance of my burrow with my beard!'
He would say: Plug my beard into the hole of my burrow
