I sought out Sa'd Allah, taking his name as a good omen,

And said, "A generous man, between Musa and Maryam."

Then I found him drawn to generosity, yet held back

By veins tracing their descent to his blue-eyed maternal uncles.

    Whenever Arab pride roused him

Toward glory, his Armenian nature said, "Sleep!"

So poetry's rhymes spent the night between my ribs,

Seething, while waves of rajaz verse came crashing.

I am minded to speak, but my tongue is held back from foul speech,

And from speaking ill of him, by the kindness of Muslim—

A youth, Arab on his mother's and father's sides, pure in

    Lineage, character, loins, and mouth.
