لِلَّهِto God (an exclamation of praise) قاضيthe judge of دَينَدوزَDaynaduz فَإِنَّهُfor indeed he
قاضٍa judge إِذاwhen أَسدىbestowed a favor أَطالَmade it long وَأَعرَضاand made it broad
How admirable is the judge of Daynaduz, for he is
For God's sake, Qadi Dayndawz, for he
a judge who, when he bestows a favor, makes it long and broad.
Is a judge; when he renders justice, he is deliberate and impartial.
المُتقِنُthe one who perfects الأَعمالَdeeds حَتّىso much so that أَنَّهاthat they
بَهَرَتdazzled وَأَعجَزَand surpassed صُنعُهاtheir workmanship مَنthose who قَدalready مَضىpassed before
He perfects his deeds so thoroughly that they
He performs his duties so well that his accomplishments
have dazzled, their workmanship outdoing all who came before.
Dazzle, and their quality amazes those of the past.
سَترَclothed الأَرامِلَwidows وَاليَتامىand orphans كَفُّهُhis hand
وَسَعىand he strove فَأَصبَحَso became سَعيُهُhis striving عَينَthe very essence of الرِضىapproval
His hand has clothed widows and orphans,
His palm has sheltered widows and orphans;
and he strove, and his striving became approval itself.
He has striven, so his efforts have become the true comfort.
لَولاهُbut for him لَمnot تُستَرbe covered لِمَيتٍfor a dead person عَورَةٌnakedness

Without him, no dead person's nakedness would be covered
Without him, no one would have covered the nakedness
among us, nor would any prayer be deemed acceptable.
Of our dead, nor would any prayer have been acceptable.
ماnot إِنan emphatic particle تَراهُyou see him الدَهرَat any time إِلّاexcept آمِراًgiving orders
وَسطَamid النَدِيِّthe assembly وَناهِياًand forbidding وَمُحَرِّضاand urging
You never, at any time, see him but giving orders
You only see him commanding right
amid the assembly, forbidding and urging.
And forbidding wrong, urging and rousing to action.
كَمhow many مِنof فَقيرٍa poor man صُنتَyou preserved مُهجَتَهُhis life وَلَوand were it

How many a poor man's life have you preserved! And were it
How many destitutes has he protected from misery? Without
not for your hand's kindness, he would have died of cold.
The work of your hands, they would have perished from the cold.
وَرُواقِand many a pavilion of ملكٍa king أَنتَyou شِدتَyou raised ظِلالَهُits shade
لَولاكَbut for you زالَwould have vanished ظِلالُهُits shade وَتَقَوَّضاand collapsed
And many a king's pavilion—you raised its shade;
He has erected the portico of a ruler which, without him,
but for you, its shade would have vanished and collapsed.
Would have fallen into ruin and decay.
أَصبَحتَyou have become إِنif نَشَرَmade public اِمرؤٌa man مِنof صُنعِهِhis good deeds
ماwhat قَدalready مَضىhas passed تَطويyou fold away الصَنيعَthe kindness إِذاwhen مَضىit is past
Now, if a man unfolds his good deeds—
When a man displays work he has done in the past,
those already past—you fold away a kindness once it is done.
He rolls up his accomplishments when they are past.
وَلَرُبَّand indeed many a مُنبَتٍّstranded traveler وَصَلتَyou reunited بِصَحبِهِwith his companions
وَطَريقُهُwhile his path لِخَفائِهِbecause of its hiddenness قَدalready أَغمَضاgrew obscure
And many a stranded traveler you reunited with his companions,
He has joined many a clan to his company, though the path to it
while his path, being hidden, had grown obscure.
Was obscure, and he made its difficult course easy.
وَلَكَمand how often رَكَضتَyou galloped فَنلتَand you attained بِالرَكضِby galloping المُنىdesires
وَأَنَرتَand you illuminated مَطوِيّاًwhat was folded away وَرضتَand you tamed الرَيّضاthe unbroken steed
And how often you galloped and won your wishes by galloping,
How often has he raced to obtain the goal,
and lit up what lay folded away, and tamed the unbroken steed.
Lightening the heavy load, pleasing the mounter!
وَكَسَتand clothed أَنامِلُكَyour fingertips اليَراعَthe reed pen وَشائِعاًskeins of thread
هُنَّthey السَحابُthe clouds سَقىwatered البِلادَthe lands وَرَوَّضاand made them meadows
And your fingertips clothed the reed pen in skeins;
His fingers have clothed the meadows with green so lush
they are clouds that watered the lands and turned them into meadows.
The clouds pour rain upon the countries and refresh them.
وَصَنيعَةٍand many a kindness قَدindeed باتَspent the night غَيرُكَsomeone other than you نائِماًasleep

And many a kindness—another spent the night asleep
While others sleep through their neglect of some craft,
heedless of it, while your eyelid kept vigil and never closed—
His eyes vigilantly refrain from slumber.

counted, extended, and witnessed,
His righteous acts, manifest and witnessed,
white, its bestowal forestalling any request for it.
Are white: their performance brooks no delay.
كِلتاboth يَدَيكَyour two hands لِصُنعِهاto bestow it مَبسوطَةٌoutstretched

Both your hands are outstretched to bestow it,
Both his hands are outstretched in their fashioning,
vying with each other like the gleam of lightning as it flashes.
Vying like the flashing of lightning.
كَمhow many a فارِسٍhorseman فيin راحَتَيكَyour two palms ثِيابُهُhis garments

How many a horseman's garments rest in your palms,
What knight has he not clothed in ease,
and his steed, and the unsheathed Mashrafi sword!
His steed accoutred, and readied for the desired raid!
لَوif رامَsought نَشرَto recount صَنائِعٍfavors أَسدَيتَهاyou bestowed them

فيماin what مَضىhas passed بَشَرٌa mortal لَضاقَwould surely be too narrow بِهِfor him الفَضاthe open expanse
If a mortal sought to recount the favors you bestowed
If he wished to recount his deeds from the past,
in times past, all space would be too narrow for him.
Mortals would find the universe too cramped for them.
يَسقيhe gives water إِذاwhen بخلَwithheld السَحابُthe clouds وَيُرتَوىand one's thirst is quenched
مِنهُfrom him وَعارِضُwhile the cloud bank of مُزنِهِhis rainclouds قَدalready أَعرَضاspread wide
He waters when the clouds withhold, and one drinks one's fill
He gives water in drought when clouds refuse it
from him, while the bank of his rainclouds spreads wide.
And faces of misery are parched and frowning.
فَاللَهُso may God يُبقيpreserve لِلخَليفَةِfor the caliph صُنعَهُhis beneficence

So may God preserve his beneficence for the caliph,
So may God preserve the Caliph's deeds for us
and, for our sake, keep his feet from being made to slip.
And protect his feet from stumbling!
