ساحَتَيهاtheir two courtyards عَنfrom needing صيفٍsummer rain وَرَبيعِand spring rain
Has my eye done its duty by the ruins, sparing
Have my eyes slept long for the caravan
their two courtyards the need for summer and spring rain?
Making their meadows suffice from summer and spring?
وَضَلالٌand misguidance سُؤالُquestioning غَيرِone who is not مُجيبِresponsive
وَسَفاهٌand foolishness دُعاءُcalling out to غَيرِone who is not سَميعِable to hear
And questioning one who does not answer is misguided;
Wandering is the question of one with no answer
and calling to one who cannot hear is folly.
And foolishness is the prayer of one unhearing.
لَوif رَآنيhe saw me العَذولُthe reproacher يَومَthe day اِستَقَلّواthey departed
لَرَثىhe would have felt pity ليfor me فيat مَوقِفِstanding place التَوديعِfarewell
Had the reproacher seen me the day they departed,
If the lover had seen me the day they departed
he would have pitied me at the place of farewell.
He would have wept for me at the moment of farewell,

Tears that leave the morning rainclouds bewildered,
Tears that bewilder the valleys,
and sighing that my ribs are too narrow to contain.
And sighs too great for my ribs.
