هَجَوتُ الأَكابِرَ في جِلَّقٍ

هَجَوتُ الأَكابِرَ في جِلَّقٍ

وَرُعتُ الوَضيعَ بِهَجوِ الرَفيعِ

وَرُعتُ الوَضيعَ بِهَجوِ الرَفيعِ

I lampooned the great men in Jilliq—Damascus—

I lampooned the grandees in Jillaq,

and struck fear into the lowly by lampooning the eminent.

and frightened the lowly by lampooning the exalted.

وَأُخرِجتُ مِنها وَلكِنَّني

وَأُخرِجتُ مِنها وَلكِنَّني

رَجَعتُ عَلى رغمِ أَنفِ الجَميعِ

I was driven out of it; yet I
