How many a thrust has his blade’s edge set gushing—
How many a wound his blade’s edge has made gush with blood,
piercing clean through, with kidneys threaded upon it!
piercing through, with kidneys strung within it!

And how many a band has his prowess surprised at dawn,
And many a flock his might has assailed at dawn,
leaving it no water to drink, no pasture to graze.
depriving it of water and grazing on grass!

Yes, and how often, from his wealth, he has outfitted
an orphaned girl, giving her in marriage to a widower.
an orphan girl for marriage, wedding her to a needy man!

His stand in deadly assault is nothing one would wish to face;
His stand amid slaughter is not to be desired,
the fire he kindles in war is not one to draw near for warmth.
and his fire in war cannot be approached for warmth.
