O you who put the ceaseless rain to shame when it pours,

And belittle the encircling ocean when it swells.

You are he whose clear judgment has always been

Like dawn, should the night of calamities grow dark.

O Kaaba of the bounty I have called upon:

“For pilgrimage, bring me to her, a consecrated pilgrim.”

    فَعَلامَ بِتُّ وَقَد همى أَشكو الظَما

    Your lightning was not rainless when I watched it;

Why, then, did I spend the night complaining of thirst, though it had poured?

Far be it from your glory that I seek refuge in its shade,

And among its followers be a mere relative clause to “what.”

Your brows had never knitted at me—if only I

Knew—may you be spared blame—why they both frowned.

Your generosity sees my farthest goal

As easy, and sees my poverty as a prize.
