Leave her, you two, if she seeks to turn toward the protected pastures;
for lightning has roused a hidden malady within her.

A flash shone for us from the direction of al-Ghawr,
glimmering in a valley brimming with darkness.

So its gleam, whenever it flashed, recalled to me
a time that passed in ease, and an age that slipped away,

and a garden where, whenever the breeze breathed through it
just before dawn, you would think moist aloeswood had been kindled.

May God water that garden for me with a rain-laden
cloud, black and embroidered at the flanks.

How often I have shortened the night there with a visitor
who braved the terrors of night travel and ventured boldly in,

eluding the gaze of the spiteful; and whoever fears
the eyes of foes rides the night's black steed;

and with a cup whose admixture endowed it with bubbles,
so the mixing laid upon it a neatly strung necklace.

رَأَيتُ السَما كَالأَرضِ وَالأَرضَ كَالسَما
Dark-red wine: whenever I took three cups of it,
I saw the sky as earth, and earth as sky.

And from it a veil spread over my eyes,
so I saw things only in imagination;

and with a slender-waisted youth of swaying form, as though he were
a branch that had grown upon a dune of sand.

He bore a sun at his summit, shading it
with night, and revealed stars in his front teeth.

He had not known what shunning was; it was only that
the slanderers beset him until he learned.

So another now gathers the honey of his saliva,
delicious, while I reap bitter colocynth from his false reproaches.

He feared for the rose that modesty had planted
upon his cheek, lest it be touched and kissed;

so he drew over it a keen blade from his eyelids,
and loosed into it a speckled serpent from his sideburns.

I revere him for what I see of his beauty,
as the priest revered Jesus, son of Mary.

I swore by the Lord of the camels dancing toward Mina,
and by Him who ordained the seven pebbles, and by whoever cast them:

is fairer of face than my beloved when he frowns—
then how must it be when you behold him smiling?
