وَصاحِبand a companion قالَsaid فيin مُعاتَبَتيreproaching me
وَظَنَّand he thought أَنَّthat المَلالَweariness مِنfrom قِبَليmy side
And a companion said, reproaching me,
thinking that I was the one grown weary:
قَلبُكَyour heart قَدindeed كانَwas شافِعِيmy intercessor (Shafiʿi wordplay) أَبَداًalways
ياO مالِكيmy master (Maliki wordplay) كَيفَhow صِرتَhave you become مُعتَزِليmy shunner (Muʿtazili wordplay)
“Your heart had always been my intercessor;
O my master, how have you come to shun me?”
فَقُلتُso I said إِذwhen لَجَّhe persisted فيin مُعاتَبَتيreproaching me
ظُلماًunjustly وَضاقَتand fell short عَنof عُذرِهِexcusing him حِيَليmy resources
So I said, when he persisted in reproaching me
unjustly, and I could find no way to excuse him:
خَدُّكَyour cheek ذاthis الأَشعَرِيُّdowny (Ashʿari wordplay) حَنَّفَنيhas made me a Hanafi
فَقالَso he said مِنamong أَحمَدِthe most praiseworthy (Ahmad wordplay) المَذاهِبِschools ليfor me
“This downy (Ashʿari) cheek of yours has made me a Hanafi.”
He replied, “To me, that is among the most praiseworthy schools.”
