وَلَقَدand indeed كَتَمتُI concealed اِسمَthe name of الَّذيthe one whom أَحبَبتُهُI loved him
وَدَفَنتُand I buried سِرَّthe secret of حَديثِهِhis words بَينَwithin الحَشاthe breast
Indeed, I concealed the name of the one I loved,
And buried the secret of his words within my breast.
وَرَأَيتُand I deemed نَقضَbreaking العَهدِthe pledge ذَنباًa sin يَحتَويthat engulfs
أَبَداًforever وَكَشفَand revealing السِرِّthe secret شَيئاًsomething مُفحِشاshameful
I deemed breaking the pledge a sin that engulfs one
Forever, and revealing the secret a shameful thing.
فَجَعَلتُso I made سِرَّthe secrecy of القَلبِthe heart سَتراًa veil دونَهُto shield it
فَمَنِthen who الأَمينُthe trustworthy one البَرُّthe upright one إِنif قَلبٌa heart وَشىbetrays a secret
So I made the heart's secrecy a veil to shield it;
Then who is trustworthy and upright, if a heart betrays?
إِنّيindeed I لَأَخشىI surely fear القَلبَthe heart يَكشِفُreveals سِرَّهُits secret
إِنif طارَflies عَنهُaway from it النِسرُthe eagle وَاِصطادَand hunts الرَشاthe gazelle fawn
I truly fear the heart will reveal its secret
If the eagle flies away from it and hunts the fawn.
