لاdo not تَحسبواthink أَنَّthat قَلبيmy heart عَنfrom مَحَبَّتِكُمlove for you
لا تَحسبوا أَنَّ قَلبي عَن مَحَبَّتِكُم
وَإِنand even though تَمادَيتُمyou have persisted فيin هَجرِكُمyour shunning زاغاhas strayed
وَإِن تَمادَيتُم في هَجرِكُم زاغا
Do not think that my heart, from its love for you,
Do not think that my heart has ceased to love you,
has strayed, though you have persisted in shunning me.
Though you have long estranged yourselves from me.
رَثَّتhave frayed مَواثيقُpledges عَهدٍa covenant كُنتُI used to أَعرِفُهاknow them
رَثَّت مَواثيقُ عَهدٍ كُنتُ أَعرِفُها
وَبَينَناand between us أَصبَحَhas become الشَيطانُSatan نَزّاعاa sower of discord
وَبَينَنا أَصبَحَ الشَيطانُ نَزّاعا
The pledges of a covenant I once knew have frayed,
The covenants of affection I used to know
and Satan has become a sower of discord between us.
Are now quite lost while enmity roams free.
وَلَستُand I am not آيسُdespairing مِنof وَصلٍa reunion أُسَرُّI am gladdened بِهِby it
وَلَستُ آيسُ مِن وَصلٍ أُسَرُّ بِهِ
قَدmay يَجمَعُbring together اللَهُGod بومَthe owls القَفرِthe wilderness وَالزاغاand the crow
قَد يَجمَعُ اللَهُ بومَ القَفرِ وَالزاغا
And I do not despair of a reunion that would gladden me;
I do not despair that we shall reunite
God may bring together the owls of the wilderness and the crow.
For God may join estranged hearts suddenly.
وَسَوفَand shall أَرقُبُI await بَدراًa full moon مِنfrom وِصالِكُمُreunion with you
وَسَوفَ أَرقُبُ بَدراً مِن وِصالِكُمُ
يَكونُwill be فيin ظُلمَةِthe darkness الهجرانِestrangement بَزّاغاrising brightly
يَكونُ في ظُلمَةِ الهجرانِ بَزّاغا
And I shall await a full moon of reunion with you,
I watch for the rising of a moon that brings
that will rise brightly in the darkness of estrangement.
Our long-sundered love in bright effulgency.
إِذاwhen اِختَبَرتَyou test بَنيthe sons of الدُنياthis world وَجَدتَهُمُyou find them
إِذا اِختَبَرتَ بَني الدُنيا وَجَدتَهُمُ
عَقارِباًscorpions وَثَعابيناًand serpents وَأَوزاغاand geckos
عَقارِباً وَثَعابيناً وَأَوزاغا
When you test the sons of this world, you find them
If you assay the folk of this base world
scorpions, serpents, and geckos.
You’ll find them vipers, scorpions, snakes to see.
وَإِنand if تَأَمَّلتَyou examine أَخباراًreports أَتَوكَthey came to you بِهاwith them
وَإِن تَأَمَّلتَ أَخباراً أَتَوكَ بِها
رَأَيتَyou see زوراًfalsehood وَرَوّاغاًand a sly deceiver وَأَوزاغاand geckos
رَأَيتَ زوراً وَرَوّاغاً وَأَوزاغا
And if you examine reports they have brought you,
And if you ponder all the news they bring,
you see falsehood, a sly deceiver, and geckos.
‘Tis but pretense, prating and impiety.
