لا تَظُنَّ الجَوزِيَّ يَصدُقُ في الرُؤ
ياcompletion of الرؤيا, 'the dream' فَماfor … not الأَمرُthe matter مِثلَlike ماwhat يَدَّعيهِhe claims it
يا فَما الأَمرُ مِثلَ ما يَدَّعيهِ
Do not think al-Jawzi tells the truth about the dream—
Do not think al-Jawzi tells the truth in visions
for the matter is not as he claims.
O the matter is not as he claims it to be
كَسَدَwent unsold العَلقُthe leeches فيin دِمَشقَDamascus فَأَضحىso he became
كَسَدَ العَلقُ في دِمَشقَ فَأَضحى
يَستَميلُwins over القُلوبَthe hearts بِالتَمويهِthrough deception
يَستَميلُ القُلوبَ بِالتَمويهِ
Leeches went unsold in Damascus, so he began
Al-'Alaq has conquered Damascus, so it has become
to sway hearts through deception.
He captivates hearts with deception
كَيفَhow يَرضىwould consent النَبِيُّthe Prophet يَلثُمُhe kisses مِنهُof his
كَيفَ يَرضى النَبِيُّ يَلثُمُ مِنهُ
خاتماًa ring تَبصُقُspits البَرِيَّةُall mankind فيهِinto it
خاتماً تَبصُقُ البَرِيَّةُ فيهِ
How could the Prophet consent to kiss his
How can the Prophet be pleased to kiss from him
ring, into which all mankind spits?
