Ghiyāth and ʿAmr—listen, then, to what the two of them taught
Ghiyath and Amr—so listen to what I have learned.
to two shaykhs; in my eyes, their tale is no small matter.
I have a noteworthy tale about these two elders.
غَياثٌGhiyath نَفىwarded off عَنfrom نَفسِهِhimself الحَدَّthe prescribed punishment فيfor الزِنىfornication
غَياثٌ نَفى عَن نَفسِهِ الحَدَّ في الزِنى
وَعَمروٌand Amr بِتَوقيعِby the decree of الخَليفَةِthe caliph قَرنانُa cuckold
وَعَمروٌ بِتَوقيعِ الخَليفَةِ قَرنانُ
Ghiyāth ruled the prescribed penalty for adultery inapplicable to himself,
Ghiyath spared himself the prescribed punishment for fornication,
while ʿAmr, by the caliph’s signed decree, is a cuckold.
And Amr, by the caliph’s decree, is a cuckold.
