    تَجَنَّبَ مُقلَتَيكَ لَهُ النُعاسُ

    I see your two tear ducts given to gushing;

because of this, slumber has shunned your eyes.

You treat the sickness of your longing with hopes,

then a relapse born of despair overtakes it.

I yearn, while my home lies beyond the river,

as an aged camel yearns when a fetter binds him fast.

His fierceness left him, and he grew gentle

in temperament, though he once was restive.

In a land where dogs are not dogs,

nor are the leading men there men.

They are pregnant with promises to you if they intend

a kindness—but no childbirth ever follows.

How, then, can they spend the night expecting me to praise them

in hope of their bounty—those base non-Arabs?

If greed clothes another in garments

that abase him, despair clothes me in honor.

And had I praised the kings of my people,

crowded herds of camels would have bellowed around me.

For people, on the paths to greatness,

are their followers, while they are the people's head.

Kings whose constant practice is honor and glory,

while others' practice is revelry and the winecup.

But for the house of Ayyub ibn Shadhi,

the abode of generosity would have fallen into ruin.

Every valiant warrior defends their domain,

plunging into the engulfing depths of death.

They left the cross of unbelief upon the ground,

to be trampled, though once worshipped and kissed.

And their might rubbed in the dust the noses of a people

whose proud noses even sneezing had shunned.

Men whose justice makes the lion die

of hunger, though a gazelle's covert lies beside his lair.

    With judgment unshaken, even when

    Yadhbul trembles and Qusas sways.

    لجودهُم حَوالَيهِ اِرتِجاسُ

    They built a house on the pinnacle of glory;

    around it their generosity thunders.

So its pillars are of dusky spears,

and its foundation of white sword-blades.
