ماnot بِتُّI spent the night أَشكوI complain مِنof ظُلامَةِthe injustice of بكمَشِBakmash

وَكَأَنَّand as though طُرَّتَهُhis forelock وَضَوءَand the radiance of جَبينِهِhis brow

And his forelock and his brow's radiance are like
Dawn shining clear beneath a pitch-dark night.
عَبَثَtoyed الغَرامُpassion بِقَلبِwith the heart of عاشِقِهِhis lover كَماjust as

Passion toyed with his lover's heart, just as
The breeze toyed with his tousled temple-lock.
