فَجاءَتso they came وَلِلرَمضاءِwhile the scorched ground had غَليُthe boiling المَراجِلِof cauldrons
And no circling, thirsty creatures, whose thirst peaked in summer,
Thirsty camels in summer, their thirst unquenched,
who then came while the scorched ground boiled like cauldrons,
Arrived while the heat was boiling the kettles.
فَلَمّاthen when رَأَينَthey saw الماءَthe water عَذباًsweet وَأَقبَلَتand they approached

then, when they saw the water sweet and advanced
When they saw the sweet water they went to drink,
toward it, saw death barring the watering places,
But saw death waiting there by the watering holes.
فَعادَتso they returned وَلَمand did not تَنقَعquench غَليلاًa burning thirst وَقَدand had طَوَتfolded

and turned back without slaking their burning thirst, having folded
So they turned back, their thirst still unslaked,
their innards around the venom of deadly vipers,
Having sensed the venom of the deadly snakes.
بِأَكثَرَany greater مِنthan شَوقيmy longing إِلَيكَfor you وَلَوعَتيand my anguish
عَلَيكَover you وَإِنand even though لَمdid not أَحظَI gain مِنكَfrom you بِطائِلِanything worthwhile
have a thirst greater than my longing for you and my anguish
With more longing for you than I can tell,
over you, though I have gained nothing worthwhile from you.
And grief for you, though from you I've gained nothing.
