وَماAnd not هَجَوتُI lampooned اِبنَIbn (son of) عَصرونٍʿAṣrūn أَرومُI seek لَهُfor him
وَما هَجَوتُ اِبنَ عَصرونٍ أَرومُ لَهُ
فَضلاًdistinction وَلاnor نلتُI gained مِنof فَخرٍglory وَلاnor شَرَفِhonor
فَضلاً وَلا نلتُ مِن فَخرٍ وَلا شَرَفِ
And I did not lampoon Ibn ʿAṣrūn to win him
I do not cast aspersions upon the son of 'Asrun
distinction, nor did I gain glory or honor.
Nor claim I superiority or noble birth.
لَكِنbut أُجَرِّبُI test فيهِon him خاطِريmy poetic wit عَبَثاًidly
لَكِن أُجَرِّبُ فيهِ خاطِري عَبَثاً
كَماjust as تُجَرَّبُare tested بيضُgleaming swords الهِندِIndia فيon الجِيَفِcarcasses
كَما تُجَرَّبُ بيضُ الهِندِ في الجِيَفِ
Rather, I idly test my poetic wit on him,
But in sport I try my thoughts upon him,
as India's gleaming swords are tested on carcasses.
As white Indian swords are tried on carrion.
