يَلعَبُhe plays بِالأُكرَةِwith the ball فيat مَوسِمِa festival
And a young gazelle I saw standing,
I saw him standing,
playing with a ball at a festival.
Playing with a ball in the season,
كَأَنَّهُas though he were البَدرُthe full moon وَقَدand indeed كُلّلَتwere crowned
مِنfrom عرَقِsweat خَدّاهُhis two cheeks بِالأَنجُمِwith the stars
He was like the full moon, and crowned
As if he were the full moon adorned
with stars of sweat were his cheeks.
With stars made from the sweat of his cheeks.
وَكُلَّماand whenever أَبعَدَهاsent it far away رَكضُهُhis kicking
عادَتit returned عَلىupon أَقدامِهِhis feet تَرتَميflinging itself
And whenever his kick sent it far away,
And every time his running sent it far,
it returned, flinging itself upon his feet.
It would come back falling at his feet.
قُلتُI said لَهُto him ماwhat اِسمُكَyour name قُلsay ليto me فَقَدfor indeed
سَفَكتَyou have shed مِنfrom غَيرِother than جِراحٍwounds دَميmy blood
I said to him, "What is your name? Tell me, for
I said to him, "Tell me your name," for you
you have shed my blood without a wound."
Have spilled my blood without inflicting wounds.
فَمَرَّso he went on فيin لُعبَتِهِhis game لاهِياًheedless
وَقالَand he said حَرفانِtwo letters مِنَof المُعجَمِthe alphabet
So he went on with his game, heedless,
But he passed by, distracted in his game,
and said, "Two letters of the alphabet."
And said two letters from the alphabet.
