And a contemptible fellow has always been kept among the people
A name still guarded among the people,
safe; all he wishes from them is a preposition.
Every letter of it protected from them all.
قيلَit was said ياO صاحِfriend ماwhat اِسمُهُhis name قُلتُI said بَدرٌBadr
قيلَ يا صاحِ ما اِسمُهُ قُلتُ بَدرٌ
إِنَّماmerely راءُthe letter rāʾ بَدرِهِof his name Badr واوُthe letter wāw عَمروِof ʿAmr
إِنَّما راءُ بَدرِهِ واوُ عَمروِ
It was asked, “O friend, what is his name?” I said, “Badr.”
It was said "O friend, what is his name?"
The rāʾ in his Badr is merely the silent wāw in ʿAmr.
I said "Badr," for the "r" in his name is from Amr.
