لَها لينُ مَولىً تَحتَ قُوَّةِ والي
And a bondwoman whose ancestry is Persian,
A slave girl of Persian descent
She has a bondsman's softness beneath a governor's power.
With a tutor's gentle touch under a governor's power

Upon her are cloaks whose embroidery delights you,
She is clad in robes that delight you and enchant with their beauty
As though Himyar had embroidered them in Azal.
As if draped by wild donkeys with strips of cloth

فَصيلٌ حَماهُ الخِلفَ رَبُّ عِيالِ
She cries longingly at her companion's loss, as though she were
She yearns for her absent companion as though
A weaned camel-calf denied the teat by a man with dependants.
A calf under the care of the Lord of dependents

When she senses her companion's absence, you would think her
When she senses her companion is gone, you would think
Camels bellowing at dawn to other camels.
A beauty has faded at dawn due to a rival

She keeps up a ringing sound between kāf and jīm,
She links the “k” and the “j” with a delicate trill
Whenever a right hand is followed up with a left.
Whenever a right hand follows a left
