فَكَأَنَّنيso it was as though I ناضَلتُcompeted in archery with أَحذقَthe most skillful راميarcher
An allotted fate—a glance I cast;
A gaze I sent, an opportunity at hand
so it was as though I had vied in archery with the most skillful archer.
As though with a skilled archer I vied.
أَأَلومُهُshould I blame him? فيماfor what جَنَتهُinflicted it سِهامُهُhis arrows
ماwhat ذَنبُهُhis fault الجانيthe culprit عَلَيَّagainst me سِهاميmy arrows
Should I blame him for what his arrows have wrought?
Shall I blame him that his arrows found
What fault is his? It is my own arrows that wronged me.
Their mark, though my own went wide?
لاnot أَتَّقيI guard against فيهِon his account الملامَreproach لِأَنَّنيbecause I
أَخفَيتُهُI hid him فيin القَلبِthe heart عَنfrom لُوّاميthose who reproach me
I do not fear reproach on his account, for I
No blame for him in my heart will I store,
have hidden him in my heart from those who reproach me.
Though from blamers I hide and secure.
