وَشَحطُ نَوىً لَم تُنضَ فيهِ الرَكائِبُ
A beloved has gone far away, though near and neighboring,
A beloved has distanced, though he's intimate and true
and far separation, in which no riding camels have been worn out.
The axis of my longing left barren, no rain anew
وَإِنَّand indeed قَريباًa near one لاnot يُرَجّىis hoped for لِقاؤُهُmeeting him

بَعيدٌ تَناءَى وَالمَدى مُتَقارِبُ
For a near one whose meeting cannot be hoped for
One close is far when meeting's hopeless to pursue
is far away, withdrawn, though the distance is short.
Though near, he's distant, and the range is far, yet due

I am gentle with one harsh of temper and hard of heart,
Gentle am I to his coarse soul and heart so crude
and I reproach him—if only the reproached would relent.
I'd blame him if he'd gently shepherd whom he spewed

A Turk, swaying gracefully, slender of frame,
The just measure of manners is disturbed and askewed
his mouth is pearls, his mustache emerald.
Pearls his mouth, neck rubies that dissolve imbued

He nocks an arrow from a kohl-dark, narrowed eye;
He surpasses a frowned, kohl-lined eye in his bow
its feathers are his lashes, its bows his eyebrows.
Bushy his eyebrows, lashes his feathers, curved bow

He let cheek-down flow across a smooth cheek, as though it were
He sought excuses in flood, as though it were
perfume melting upon the camphor of his cheeks.
Ambergris dissolved on his cheeks so fair

In his temples moles grew that diminish the crescent
bearing a crescent his tresses have brought to light.
When it first appears, watched by gazelles pheasant

The two scorpions of his temples crept across his cheek;
Scorpions crept to his cheeks' breadth, in that face pleasant
so they plunder and sting my heart.
So they steal my heart, evilly thieving pleasant

I marveled at his eyelids, whose sickness persisted,
I marveled at his lids when his illness subdued them
yet they grew well, while my body melts from their harm.
They recovered, while my body by their pain subdued

At his waist, how lithe, while his hips and shoulders feuded
his buttocks and shoulders tug it in opposite directions.
As they pulled, though graceful, strongly colluded

I wasted away for him until my reproachers pitied me,
I pined for him until my love-songs were fashioned
and my avowed enemy softened at my suffering.
And the jealous enemy arrows at me passioned

I was not one to submit to misfortune,
I wasn't one to grieve over fortunes new fashioned
but love's dominion cannot be overcome.
But the sway of passion is never outmatched

Clouds of eyelids, roaming by night, streaming,
Burdens of longing, hard; chains of eyelids, chained
and burdens of longing, firmly lodged, sinking deep.
Loads of passion, solid; for their goals arduously gained

Is there any escape for me from lovesickness?
Can I be saved from the illness of this ardent strained?
By my life, the paths have narrowed upon me.
My paths are straitened; I'm painfully constrained

I have milked time's udders, ease and hardship,
I've tasted life's times, easy and tribulation
and tried much, until experience seasoned me.
I've tried until experience honed my valuation
