O north wind, may you carry

My homage to the lord, the most excellent imam.

And stop in his sacred valley, and behold

The light of guidance, gleaming and never flagging,

From a glorious tree of ʿUmar's lineage,

Rich are the planting-grounds of its deep-rooted glory.

Meccan in ancestry, with a pure root,

And its branches tower above Spica, the Unarmed.

And implore a rain of bounty from his hands, for often

He has replaced the rain in every drought-stricken year.

Bounties whose clouds return as they first appeared,

Their first rains indistinguishable from those that follow.

An ocean presiding over the sciences—and who has seen

An ocean before him preside in an assembly?

And girded in God's service, he trails, for piety

And religion, the flowing robe of chastity.

Through him died innovations whose lives had stretched

For an age, and whose darkness would not lift.

Thus Islam rose through him to the loftiest hilltop,

And all else settled in the lowest depths.

    هَيهاتَ قَصَّرَ عَن مَداهُ أَبو عَلي

    A man erred in comparing him with Abū ʿAlī;

Far from it! Abū ʿAlī fell short of his reach.

If Aristotle heard a single word

Of his speech, a fit of trembling would seize him.

And Ptolemy, if he met him, would be bewildered by

His proof concerning every perplexing figure.

So, had they gathered before him, they would have known for certain

That excellence did not belong to those who came first.

And with him forbearance rests sheltered through the night, when

The winds of longing shake Yadhbul's two pillars.

He pardons grave sin out of generosity,

And gives generously when asked, and even when not asked.

He has pleased God with his deeds and his defense

Of His religion, and gladdened the Messenger's eye.

    O lord, whose ranks

Gaze at the sphere of the fixed stars from on high,

    فَبِمَجدِكَ السامي يُهَنَّأُ ما تَلي

    No office exists but your worth stands above it;

So the office you hold is congratulated on your lofty glory.

So whenever God desires to raise an office,

It passes to you and attains the noblest station.

May your dwelling remain a stopping-place for delegations,

Forever; may your presence be a cave of refuge for every hopeful seeker.
