Had my tears, on the day of your departure, not mingled
If my tears did not mix with your days,
with my crimson blood, I would have been only a pretender.
my blood would have merely claimed.
قَدindeed صَحَّproved true عِندَكَbefore you شاهِدٌa witness مِنfrom عَبرَتيmy tears

The testimony of my tears has proved true before you;
For you is a witness from my crying,
so ask the night's darkness and its stars about my bed.
so ask the darkness and its stars about where I lie down.
عاقَبتَنيyou punished me بِجِنايَةٍfor a crime لَمdid not أَجنِهاI committed it

You punished me for a crime I did not commit,
You punished me for a crime I did not commit,
unjustly—and how many a reaper has never sown!
unjustly, and how many reapers have not sown?
وَمنعتَand you barred طَيفكَyour phantom مِنfrom زِيارَةِvisiting عاشِقٍa lover

And you barred your phantom from visiting a lover
And you denied your apparition from visiting a lover,
whose life's blood you sought, and who did not resist.
you tried to destroy him yet he did not resist.
وَأَمالَكَand he swayed you الواشيthe slanderer وَلَولاand were it not for غِرَّةٌheedlessness

And the slanderer swayed you; were it not for heedlessness
And the slanderer led you astray, were it not for folly,
caused by youth, you would not have been deceived.
the youth would not have been a reason that did not betray.
فَجَمَعتَso you combined أَثقالَthe burdens of الصُدودِrejection إِلىwith النَوىseparation

So you combined the burdens of rejection and separation,
So you combined the heaviness of aloofness to yearning,
on top of reproach, upon an aching heart.
above reproach, to a heart in pain.

O departing one, with the heart amid your baggage,
Oh you who travels while the heart between its saddlebags
you lead it away through its loyalty to a faithless one's pledge.

Why did you not stop beside your lover, keeping
Why did you not stand by your lover protecting
love's covenant with him, as one stops to bid farewell?
the covenant of love in him the stance of one bidding farewell?

How can I find a way to forget, when you have not restored
How is the path to peace while you did not prepare
my reason to me, nor left my heart with me?
my mind for me nor leave my heart with me?

So time that passed watered me with bitterness,
by rain's downpour, and may it water Tuwayliʿ's open grounds.
aiming at life and watering a long bitterness.

So I shall surely endure time and its injustice,
Yet I will have patience over time and its injustice,
with the patience of a dignified man who has not yielded.
the patience of one dignified who did not submit.

And I shall surely don a coat of mail made of fortitude,
And I will wear from composure a coat
close-woven, mocking Tubbaʿ's full-length coats of mail.
of barrenness that mocks continuous following.

And I shall surely thank the misfortunes that hurled
And I will thank tribulations that threw
my hopes toward the valiant, awe-inspiring king.
my possessions to the most splendid king.

Then the shade of a radiant, noble man spread over me,
So the shades of a shining white dawn draped me
his robe of glory ample, his watering-place pure.
adding the garb of glory, pure of intention.

And I saw the best scene and experienced the most

the most noble king who offers generosity

from his palm, naturally without affectation,

A king—whenever you ask the sea of his right hand for rain,
A king, if you seek rain from the sea of his right hand,
it showers you with a steady rain that never ceases.
it pours on you with a shower that does not diminish,

Beautiful are its landmarks and how many a shower

erred so poured in a desolate plain.

I came to him when the flood had reached the heights
I came upon him while the torrent had reached perfidy in me
for me, and life's draught was muddy at its source.
and the blossoms of life were dwindling.
فَبَلَغتُso I attained مِنfrom نُعماهُhis bounty ماwhat لاdoes not يَنتَهيreach

So I attained, from his bounty, what lay beyond
So I attained from his blessings that which has no limit
my hopes, and what my ambition had never aspired to.
to my hopes and to which my ambitions did not aspire.
وَنَهىand he forbade الحَوادِثَmisfortunes أَنto تُلِمَّalight بِمَنزِليat my dwelling

And he forbade misfortunes to alight at my dwelling,
And it made tribulations refrain from assaulting my abode
and the turns of my fate to circle my abode.
and the turns of fate from encircling my square.
مُتَبَرِّعٌa willing giver بِالجودِof bounty قَبلَbefore سُؤالِهُasking him
وَالجودُand bounty جودُthe bounty of الباديءِone who gives first المُتَبَرِّعِone who gives freely
A willing giver of bounty before he is asked,
Freely bestowing before being asked
and bounty is the bounty of one who gives first and freely.
and bestowal is the bestowal of the initiator.
فَغَدَوتُso I began أُنشِدُI sing of جودَهُhis bounty مُتَمَثِّلاًquoting a verse

So I began singing of his bounty, quoting a verse,
So I came to recite his bestowal extolling
and his gifts are like surging torrents:
and his bounty is like pouring floods.
وَلَقَدand indeed دَعَوتُI called upon نَدىthe bounty of الكِرامِthe noble فَلَمand did not يجِبanswer

And indeed I called on the bounty of the noble, but it did not answer;
And I had called the echo of nobleness but it did not answer
so I shall surely thank a bounty that answered without being called.
so I thank an echo that answered and was not called.
