وَرُبَّand many a أَخٍa friend حَميمٍclose بِتُّI spent the night لَيليmy night
I am made to swallow مِنfrom مَلامَتِهِhis reproach الحَميماthe boiling water
And how often, with a close friend, I spent my night
Many a dear friend passes my nights in blame,
forced to swallow the boiling water of his reproach.
Making me drink deep of his bitter cup.
يَقولُhe says عَلامَwhy مِنfrom غَيرِother than اِجتِرامٍcommitting an offense
هَجَوتَyou lampooned موفقَMuwaffaq الدينِal-Din (of the faith) الحَكيماthe physician
He says, “Why, though he had done no wrong,
He says "Why with no just cause did you defame
did you lampoon Muwaffaq al-Din, the physician?”
The wise Mowaffaq? Such fault is corrupt."
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him تَأَنَّbe patient فَغَيرُfor it is not عَدلٍjustice
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle لامَreproached مَنone who سَلِمَwas unharmed السَليماthe snake-bitten
So I said to him, “Be patient; it is unjust
I said "Gently! He who blames the innocent
when one unharmed reproaches the snake-bitten.
Himself loses his right to justice and fair trial."
شَكَوتُI complained إِلَيهِto him مِنfrom كانونَKanun (a winter month) قُرّاًbitter cold
أَبيتُI spend the night لِضُرِّهِbecause of its harm أَرعىI watch النُجوماthe stars
I complained to him of Kanun's bitter cold;
I complained to him of the cruel, cold winter,
I spend the night, tormented by it, watching the stars.
And that I could not rest for its bitter squalls.
فَماso not أَلوىpaid heed عَلَيَّto me وَقالَand he said خَلطٌa bodily humor
يَزولُit subsides إِذاif تَجَنَّبتَyou avoid اللُحوماmeat
So he paid me no heed and said, ‘A bodily humor
But he was not kind, and said "'Tis but a spell
will subside if you avoid meat.’
That will pass when you give up meat for your meals."
فَقَضَّيتُso I spent الشِتاءَthe winter كَماjust as تَقَضّىpassed
شِتاwinter البُرغوثِof the flea فيin ذَقنِthe chin of اِبنِIbn (son of) سيماSima
So I spent the winter as it passed
So I endured the winter as the gnat endures
for a flea on Ibn Sima's chin.”
The winter in the beard of Ibn Sima.
